Union Minister inaugurates first coal gallery at National Science Centre
jatinnews.com October 17, 2024 0The first coal gallery of the Ministry of Coal, an exhibition titled ‘Black Diamond: Unveiled the Depths’, has now been inaugurated at the National Science Centre at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey jointly inaugurated the exhibition.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said
This gallery aims not only to make tourists aware of the past and present of coal but also to inspire future innovations in the field of energy generation and sustainability. The Coal Gallery is designed as an educational and interactive space dedicated to exploring the structure of coal to its important role in modern energy use. “As we move towards green energy solutions, this gallery will serve as an important reminder of the fundamental role of coal in India’s energy security and economic development,” he said.
Shri Arunish Chawla, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Smt. Nirupama Kotru, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal & Mines, Shri Sanjay Kaul, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture and other senior officials were present on the occasion.

Simulated Coal Mining Experience: The exhibition includes a walk-through simulated coal mine lift with a virtual landing at the depth of a coal seam. Tourists can explore safety equipment, long wall mining machines, continuous mining and technologies used in this work to travel to underground mines.
Dragline Simulator: A star attraction, dragline simulator allows viewers to manage this huge equipment virtually by combining a real-world console with a virtual display. This interactive exhibition provides an educational glimpse into the technical skills required in modern mining.
Coal Exploration and ‘Kayakalp’ Digital Diorama: While improved methods of exposing hidden coal reserves in the “Coal Exploration” section are on display, a digital diorama on ‘Kayakalp’ highlights Coal India Ltd’s innovative land reclamation efforts. This section shows how abandoned coal mines can be converted into eco-parks or tourist attractions.
Raniganj Mine Rescue Operation: An entertaining bravery of the Raniganj mine rescue operation and honouring the courage of those who put their lives at stake in the rescue operation, the exhibition serves as a tribute to human emotions in the face of adversity.
The foundation stone laying exhibition is going on, going beyond the traditional performances by integrating the latest technology and immersive storytelling. Tourists can understand the geological processes that have turned ancient plant material into precious “black gold” that is powering the world today.
