Union Health Ministry sensitizes Members of Parliament from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the 100-day Intensified TB Elimination Campaign

The Union Ministers of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Yadav and Smt. Anupriya Patel today sensitized the MPs from different party angles about the 100-day-long tb eradication drive at Balayogi Auditorium, Parliament Library Building. The MPs were briefed about the campaign objectives, important activities and their role in supporting the campaign.

Around 250 MPs were present at the event and supported the campaign efforts and pledged to speed up community awareness efforts in their respective constituencies

Addressing the gathering, the Union Ministers highlighted the important leadership role of MPs in achieving tb eradication goals. They urged the MPs to monitor the 100-day-long anti-TB drive in their respective constituencies, create awareness and sensitise the community to reduce the stigma around the disease and actively participate in the campaign.

The Union ministers highlighted the government’s success in reducing tb infections since 2015, which is more than double the pace of decline seen globally. The MPs were briefed about a number of innovative interventions in the last 10 years, including connectivity with the private healthcare sector, introduction of ni-akshaya poshan yojana, recent doubling of direct benefit transfer assistance to patients, and improvement of diagnosis and treatment capacity of the National Tuberculosis Eradication Programme. The ministers also highlighted the central role of 1.75 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs

Ms. Patel highlighted that the central government’s efforts towards reducing both TB infection and mortality have been recognised in the recently released WHO Global TB Report. The mortality rate of TB patients in India has come down from 28% to 22% and tb treatment coverage has been increased by 32%

Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, Union Health Secretary stressed on the importance of this campaign to reduce tb burden in the country. He noted that the recently held friendly cricket match between the two Houses of Parliament gave a lot of impetus to the National Tuberculosis Eradication Campaign.

The Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the National Health Mission reviewed the 100-day campaign aimed at reducing tb infection and tb mortality in 347 priority districts of the country.

To increase detection, intensive case finding campaigns will be conducted using improved screening and diagnostic technologies to reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation. In parallel, to reduce tb mortality, the programme will expand the availability of innovative initiatives such as differentiated TB care to provide specialized care for high-risk patients and increase nutritional support through the Ni-Renewable Nutrition Scheme.
