Today presided over the 165th anniversary of income tax day observed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in New Delhi. Union Minister of State for Finance Shri Pankaj Chaudhary was also present at the event. Revenue Secretary Shri Sanjay Malhotra; Mr. Ravi Agarwal, Chairman, CBDT; Members of CBDT and other officials and officials of the department were present on the occasion. The event was attended by senior officials of the Government of India.

In her keynote address, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman complimented the versatility of the officers and officials of the Income Tax Department.

The Union Finance Minister lauded the Department for achieving the highest tax collection; Along with this, the success of faceless assessment and appeal system.

Ms Sitharaman called upon the department to be fair and friendly and ensure that the taxpayer experience improves. “The tax notices for taxpayers should be simple, simple and easy to understand,” he said.

The Union Finance Minister stressed on the need for proper use of power to ensure compliance, not to create fear among taxpayers, and on early payment of refunds and following due process to promote voluntary compliance. Ms. Sitharaman stressed on the need to enhance efficiency especially in the field of adoption of world-class best practices in tax administration.

At the same time, Smt. Sitharaman emphasised upon capacity building especially in terms of adopting global best practices in tax administration.

Underlining the growing trust of taxpayers towards the Department, the Union Finance Minister further expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the honest taxpayers for their contribution in delivering on welfare & development, appreciating the fact that there were 58.57 lakh first-time ITR filers for AY 2024-25. It showcased that India was getting more formalized as an economy and more people are coming forward to voluntarily pay taxes, She said.

In his address on the occasion, Union Minister of State for Finance Shri Pankaj Chaudhary lauded exhorted the Officers and Officials of the Department to align their goals to achieve the vision of the Prime Minister of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

While commending the efforts of the Department for working tirelessly to ensure a fair and transparent tax administration and in garnering of revenue for the Government, the Minister of State also emphasised on how the Government is utilising the revenue so garnered in the development of the nation in various areas such as housing for the poor, education, health and Infrastructure.

Shri Chaudhary lauded the Department’s efforts to make compliance easy for the taxpayers by introducing the faceless regime, e-verification, seamless e-filing etc. The Minister of State observed that the introduction of technology-driven initiatives have simplified and streamlined tax procedures and made them more taxpayer-friendly and asked the Department to focus on widening of tax base which is the need of the hour.

In his address, Secretary Revenue, Shri Sanjay Malhotra, while extending best wishes to the officers and officials of the Department, appreciated the Department for robust tax collection, increase in tax base and ease of compliance. Shri Malhotra commended the Department’s focus on use of technology comparable with global practices to improve taxpayer services.

The Revenue Secretary lauded the department for making huge strides since the inception of income tax in India and highlighted how revenues have increased from just Rs 30 lakh to Rs 20 lakh crore, the tax infrastructure has doubled and the growth in GDP ratio to tax. He appreciated the new initiatives like rationalisation of corporate tax and the new tax regime introduced by the department and urged the department to renew its commitment to honesty, diligence and service.

Earlier, CBDT Chairman Ravi Agarwal welcomed the guests on behalf of the Income Tax Department in his inaugural address. Stating that the department’s focus in the last few years has been on the use of technology to enhance taxpayer services and ease compliance, Mr. Agarwal highlighted some of the notable achievements including the 17.7% growth achieved in net collections in the last financial year and 7.5% increase in the number of ITRs filed in the previous year (up to the 31st decade).

Mr Agarwal also noted that 72% of the returns were filed under the new tax regime, highlighting its widespread acceptance — those who filed 58.57 lakh returns for the first time were a perfect sign of widening the tax base.

Mr. Agarwal highlighted the achievements in the field of Advance Pricing Agreement in which a record number of 125 APAs were signed in the last financial year and also mentioned that the 10th Income Tax Overseas Unit has been commissioned in Abu Dhabi, UAE which shows the department’s commitment to expand its global reach. The CBDT Chairman, while approving the new versions of the CPC-TDS, ITBA and TaxNet projects, emphasised on the department’s emphasis on technology upgradation and review of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Mr. Agrawal reiterated the Department’s commitment to the welfare of employees, human resource problems and infrastructure development and outlined the PDS (P: Professionalism and Probity, R: Responsibilities and Accountability in Admin)

Certificates of meritorious service and excellence as well as certificates of excellence in creative work/ sports were given. The winners of the all-India slogan writing competition were felicitated. A film on the technical initiatives of the department over the years was also screened.
