At present, 10 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are under construction for long and medium distance travel in the country. The first prototype has been prepared and will be field trials. Apart from this, technology partners have also been awarded for the construction of 200 Vande Bharat Sleeper Rakes. After the successful completion of the trial, the time limit for the operation of the train has been fixed. As of December 2, 2024, 136 Vande Bharat train services are operational on the broad gauge electrification network of The Indian Railways for short and medium distance travel across the country.

Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a statement at the Table of The Lok Sabha that 136 Vande Bharat train services, which were chair cars in the broad gauge electrification network of The Indian Railways, are now operational to provide world-class travel experience; Overall acquisition of Vande Bharat Express till October 2024

Replying to another question, the Union minister said the manufacturing units of The Indian Railways have been manufacturing only LHB coaches since April 2018. The production of LHB coaches has been steadily increasing in the last few years. The number of LHB coaches manufactured in 2014-24 is 16 times (36,933) higher than what was produced in 2004-14 (2,337). The Indian Railways (IR) has extended the technically advanced LHB coaches, which have features such as anti-climbing system, failure signalling system as well as air suspension and less corrosive shells.

Under the “Sugamya Bharat Mission” (Sugam Bharat Abhiyan), The Indian Railways is taking important steps towards ensuring accessibility for the differently-abled (divyangjan) and passengers with low mobility. Under the guidelines of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, extensive facilities like ramps, affordable parking, braille and touch symbols, low-altitude counters and lifts have been provided. read more
