The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Ram Nath Thakur called on the Minister of Agriculture of Chile, Shri Esteban Valenzuela and his delegation for a high level bilateral meeting held at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi today

The meeting focused on key areas of mutual interest and cooperation

The meeting focused on key areas of mutual interest and cooperation, including implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation, Horticulture Action Plan and e-certification of Phytosanitary Certificates. The talks addressed agricultural challenges in both Chile and India and also explored opportunities to promote agricultural trade between the two countries. The Ministers stressed on the importance of sustainable practices and reiterated their commitment to deepen agricultural partnerships to strengthen cooperation

The Chilean Minister extended his gratitude to Mr. Thakur for his warm welcome

The Chilean Minister extended his gratitude to Mr. Thakur for his warm welcome and the proposal from the Indian side to set up a task force to address market access and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues. The Chilean minister promised to resolve the market entry of Indian mangoes and pomegranates at the earliest and also conveyed Chile’s keen interest in importing Indian bananas and basmati rice. The Minister of State stressed on the need to explore opportunities for expansion of trade in roses, garlic, kidney beans and other commodities with an aim to unleash the full potential of bilateral trade and expressed interest in widening the scope of agricultural commodities by including walnuts, fruits and vegetables in the present list

The meeting with The Minister of State with Thakur concluded to continue working closely with the Chilean side to further strengthen the bilateral relations and conveyed his best wishes for a fruitful and enjoyable stay in India.

The meeting was attended by Chilean Ambassador Juan Angulo, Odepa’s Head of International Affairs Gabriel Leseca, and Marcelo Alvarez, a communications professional with the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture.
