At the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2024, an enlightened panel discussion on the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the film industry was held. Titled ‘The Magic of AI’, the session focused on the scope, application and ethical considerations of AI technology in filmmaking. The panelists discussed both the advantages and potential shortcomings of AI, providing a detailed overview of its impact on the industry.

Shankar Ramakrishnan highlighted the skills ai has brought in filmmaking and said that AI can properly handle many tasks on film sets by reducing the time required for each work. He pointed out that while AI reduces the need for human labour, it also risks making people too dependent on technology. AI can handle all kinds of work in just one click, but it also has the potential to make us lazy by working for us,” he said

Ujjwal Nirgunkar stressed on the need for rapid development and continuous updation of technology . He explained the difference between traditional AI that relies on patterns in data to make predictions and generative AI learned from existing data to generate new, similar data. He highlighted the potential of AI to level the playing field for newcomers and small producers in the film industry. He said how ai can suggest the ingredients required for the project when the storyboard is ready, but cautioned that it needs to be used ethically.

Sanjay Jangid likened the potential impact of AI to past technological revolutions such as electricity, internet and mobile phones. He stressed on the importance of ethical behaviour and warned against using AI as a shortcut. “If you throw garbage, you’ll throw out the trash. We should use AI carefully and only for good purposes.

The discussion highlighted the need for ethical considerations and responsible behaviour as well as the potential of AI to revolutionise the film industry. The panelists’ understanding provided valuable perspective on the future of filmmaking in the ERA of AI.  read more
