The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today addressed a function to mark the International Day of Abhidhamma and recognised Pali as a classical language.

Shri Narendra Modi, today announced that the Government will take all steps to preserve and develop the teachings of the Pali language and the Buddha written in it.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today announced that the Government will take all steps to preserve and develop the teachings of the Pali language and the Buddha written in it. Noting that today is a historic occasion, Abhidhamma Diwas, the Prime Minister said that Pali is the language in which the teachings of Buddha were taken in today’s day and age, now this language has been given classical status. So Pali is important to understand Dhamma. Language is not just a medium of communication, it is the spirit of a civilization, it is culture, it is heritage. It is our responsibility to keep Pali alive and buddha’s message through it. Speaking at the inauguration of The International Abhidhamma Day and the recognition of Pali as a classical language, the Prime Minister emphasised that though Pali is no longer in use, a language, literature, art and spiritual traditions reveal the heritage of a nation.

Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture & Tourism and Shri Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, “As per the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, a Buddha Circuit is being developed in India and Nepal. The Centre has adopted Pali as a classical language. The Central Government is making unprecedented efforts to preserve and promote the heritage of Buddha Dhamma culturally.

International Buddhist Federation Secretary-General Shartse Rinpoche Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden at Pali gave a call and good wishes. Around 2000 delegates participated in the International Abhidhamma Day. Ambassadors and High Commissioners of more than 10 countries were also present.

Prof. Bimalendra Kumar, Professor, Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Banaras Hindu University and Prof. Bimalendra Kumar, Chairman, Council of Indian Cultural Relations (ICCR), Lumbini Buddhist University, Nepal, presented a special lecture on the importance of Pali as a classical language of India. One, scrolls depicting different scripts of Southeast Asian countries and a map of the region showing the prevalence of the Pali language, were displayed.
