Telangana and Andhra Pradesh rain update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported significant rainfall in several districts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rains have had several impacts and more rains are predicted in the coming days.

Rainfall Statistics and Forecasts

According to the IMD, several districts of Telangana have recently recorded rainfall of up to 19 cm. The IMD has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till September 1, 2024. The low pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a low pressure and has resulted in heavy rains.
Hyderabad, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Warangal districts in Telangana received the maximum rainfall. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid waterlogged roads (NDTVs)

Impact on Andhra Pradesh

Several parts of Andhra Pradesh have been badly affected due to heavy rains. Incessant rains in Vijayawada and adjoining areas have led to landslides and floods. Low-lying areas may be flooded further as the water level in the Krishna and Godavari rivers is rising.
In Vijayawada, landslides triggered by incessant rains that killed one person, triggering landslides and floods in the region.

Educational institutions in the state in the affected areas have been closed due to bad weather (The Hindu).

Casualties and safety measures

Sadly, nine people, including a school teacher and two students, were killed due to heavy weather in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district. Apart from this, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh has announced a compensation (South First) to the families of the deceased.
Local authorities, including the Andhra Pradesh chief minister, are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel. They are coordinating with various departments to control the rising water level in the river and ensure safety of the public through early warning and emergency measures.

Moving forward

Heavy rains have been predicted to continue in the region, particularly affecting the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Residents of these areas have been advised to stay updated with the IMD notification and take necessary precautions to stay safe during adverse weather. read more
