The local community is involved in the development and maintenance of inland waterway infrastructure in Assam. In order to cater to the needs of Assam and the North East, a Maritime Skill Development Centre (MSDC) has been set up at Guwahati for skill development in the inland waterways sector. So far, 24 batches (467 candidates) have been trained in this field. For the year 2023-2024, direct employment generation through river port and waterways development projects in Assam is 2026. Indirect employment is provided to many persons involved in freight, passenger transport and tourism etc. in the inland waterways sector, whose data is not maintained.
