The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), in collaboration with the Directorate general rehabilitation (DGR) of the Ministry of Defence, inaugurated the first certification programme for defence officials at the IICA campus in Manesar, Gurugram today.

The two-week-long certification programme consists of 30 senior officers, who are serving and recently retiring, representing the three services. The event was attended by air vice marshals, major generals and rear admirals among other officials. The two-week long event will conclude on August 31, 2024 with a certification ceremony

Speaking as the keynote speaker, Monika Agarwal, Managing Director, Financial Services, Asia Pacific/India Lead Board Services, Korn Ferry, highlighted the importance of the Board as a key tool of corporate governance. He stressed on the role of board members in raising the standard of corporate governance. Ms Agarwal drew attention to the major challenges faced by the present boards and the role of independent directors.

His address highlighted the synergy between India Inc and the armed forces by drawing the attention of corporate houses to harness their leadership and strategic knowledge by inducting defence officers on the board on the basis of their skills and capabilities. Mrs. Agarwal also guided the group on key aspects of behaviour.

The two-week programme has been designed with an aim to attract participants with conceptual and regulatory understanding on corporate governance and aimed at making participants aware of the roles and responsibilities of independent directors and helping them contribute effectively. The participants expressed their desire and enthusiasm to broaden their horizons to understand corporate governance and its nuances, contribute to the development of Indian corporations and, in turn, contribute to the development of the country. IICA continues to support initiatives that promote good governance and responsible business practices.

Chief Administrative Officer of IICA, Col. Amandeep Singh Puri welcomed the participants and discussed the proposal of IICA for the board members and apprised them about the design of the programme.
