The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an order directing all food business operators (FPOs) to immediately remove the claim of '100 per cent fruit juice' from the labels and advertisements of the restructured fruit juice. All FPOs have been directed to complete all pre-printed packaging materials before September 1, 2024. It has come to the notice of FSSAI that many FBOs are wrongly marketing various types of reconstituted fruit juices claiming to be 100 per cent fruit juices. According to the Food Safety and Standards (Advertisement and Claims) Rules, 2018, there is no provision for 100 per cent claim. Such claims are misleading, especially in situations where the main ingredient of fruit juice is water and primary ingredients, for which, as claimed, are present only in limited concentrations, or fruit juices are regenerated. In the clarification issued regarding the marketing and sale of reconstituted fruit juice as '100 per cent fruit juice', FBOs have been reminded that they must comply with the norms for fruit juices as per sub-rule 2.3.6 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Rules, 2011. The regulations state that products under these standards must be labelled in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Performance) Rules, 2020. In particular, in the list of elements, the word "reconstituted" must be mentioned against the name of the juice that has been carefully reconstructed. Besides, if the nutritious sweetener is more than 15 g/kg, the product has to be labelled as 'sweet juice'. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is dedicated to the protection and promotion of public health through regulation and monitoring of food safety standards.
