Election Commission to hold election governing body conference this week

The Election Commission of India is organising a two-day international conference titled “World Election Year 2024: A Reiteration of Democratic Spaces; Takeaway for EMB in New Delhi on January 23 and 24, just ahead of National Voters’ Day. The conference is scheduled to take place after an unusual event when more than 70 countries with nearly half the world’s population voted. The aim of the conference is to focus on key areas of contemporary electoral management and possible perspectives of elections and to draw important lessons.

The conference is expected to see the complete details of India’s Lok Sabha General Election 2024, the largest election in the world, which is a real learning space for all election managers.

Eci’s International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) and India Association of World Election Bodies (A-Web) have started working together.

The first session titled “Election Year 2024 – Major Learning” will be jointly chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner of Bhutan and the Chairman of the Election Commission of Namibia. Election officials from India, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Indonesia and Kazakhstan will make presentations during the session.

The second session on “Role of Technology in The Conduct of Elections – Opportunities and Challenges” will be chaired by The Election Commissioner of India, Mr. Gyanesh Kumar and will have presentations from the electoral authorities of Bhutan and Russia.

The third session will be chaired by Election Commissioner Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu on “Social Media Platforms and Election Management – Consultation and The Way Forward”. The session will be attended by the President and CEO of IFES along with representatives of election governing bodies of Nepal and Namibia.
