Shri Malhotra said that under the visionary leadership of The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has solved by bringing an important part of India’s population into the banking ecosystem. Currently, there are over 54 crore accounts, with total deposits of around Rs 2.39 lakh crore, which is more than 15 times since the beginning. The scheme has been particularly successful in rural and semi-urban areas and women, and about 66% of the accounts come from these areas. In addition, 37.02 crore RuPay cards have been issued to PMJDY account holders, with a significant increase in the average deposit amount per account, reflecting an increase in consumption and saving behaviour. The World Bank has also acknowledged that India has achieved its financial inclusion target in just six years, which would have taken 47 years without its improved digital public infrastructure.

This growth in digital payments has positioned India as a global leader in the sector and UPI is now operational in seven countries, further boosting financial inclusion and remittance inflows. Through the continuous expansion of initiatives such as digital payment solutions and UPI, India is setting new benchmarks for economic empowerment and financial transparency and also noted that more than 40% of the world’s real-time payment transactions take place in India.

The central government’s emphasis on inclusive healthcare has ensured that India was only the fifth country to develop covid vaccines and successfully implemented the world’s largest vaccine programme in which 221 crore doses were administered to the people of the country.
